.

The 82nd annual session of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) began on April 20, 2026 with the theme "Advancing Societies for All Ages" and was chaired by H.E. Bayramov, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan, for 5 days.

At the opening session of this summit, in the General Debate, Dr. Nasseredin Heidari, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Bangkok and Permanent Representative of I.R. Iran to United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific and other international organizations, while referring to the numerous threats to multilateralism and international institutions that have emerged as a result of the illegal and premeditated military aggression of the United States and the Israeli regime against the Islamic Republic of Iran over the past six weeks, during which officials, civilians, and vital infrastructure in Iran were targeted, emphasized Iran's right to legitimate self defense and warned that the continuation of gross violations of international law in the absence of concrete measures by other countries will pose existential risks to the fundamental goals of development and, subsequently, the pillars of the United Nations.

Taking into account the theme of the annual UNESCAP meeting, “A Society for All Ages,” His Excellency outlined the reconstruction and real advancement of development goals for all under three dimensions vital for the future of the region: economic resilience to global shocks, strong social inclusion for all segments of society, and environmental sustainability with an emphasis on preventing severe ecological damage caused by wars and armed conflicts. In conclusion, citing the UNESCAP mandate, the Ambassador called for a renewed commitment to multilateralism, just peace, and shared responsibility in order to achieve inclusive progress and ensure stability throughout the region and beyond.
