Press Release of the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in the Kingdom Thailand

Extracted from Foreign Ministry and Permanent Mission of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the UN (New York) Statements and letter addressed to the President of the UN SC and UN SG following Israeli regime cowardly assassination of Mr. Ismail Haniyah in Tehran

1-In the early hours of Wednesday, July 31, 2024, the indefatigable Sheikh Ismail Haniyah, the head of the political bureau of Hamas and the proud and brave leader of the Palestinian Resistance, was hit and became martyred in a heinous terrorist attack by The Zionist regime of Israel, while he was in Iran as official guest of the Iranian government and people participate in the inauguration Ceremony of Iran’s new elected President.

2-This covert act of terror is yet another proof of the terrorist nature of the Zionist regime and another sign of the aggressive and flagrant violation of principles and rules of international law and the UN Charter, but it also poses a serious threat to regional and international peace and security.

3-The criminal Israeli regime’s act is the latest in a series of assassination attempts against the Palestinian resistance leaders in other countries over the past few decades, but the new aggressive and terrorist that is, the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh is part of the Zionist regime of Israel’s genocidal war on the Palestinians, especially in the last 10 months aimed at spreading insecurity across The Middle East and West Asia.

4-The US government is responsible for this heinous act of terrorism as supporter of the Zionist regime in Tel Aviv’s continuation of the occupation of Palestine and genocidal war on Palestinians.

5-The Islamic Republic of Iran strongly condemns this flagrant act of terrorism perpetrated by the Zionist regime’s continuation of the occupation of Palestine and its genocidal war on Palestinians.

6-The Islamic Republic of Iran condemns in the strongest possible terms this obnoxious terrorist function as the most serious violation of International Law and the UN Charter of the UN as well as grave breach of Iran’s sovereignty and national security.

7-While cognizant of its insurmountable role in preserving regional peace and security, the Islamic Republic of Iran stands determined to take every necessary measure to defend its national security and sovereignty and any transgressions.

8-The Islamic Republic of Iran underscores its inalienable right of respond appropriately to this brazen act against its sovereignty and territorial integrity and expects that other Countries and International Organizations to seriously and effectively condemn this barbaric, and heinous act of terrorism and effectively pressure the Israeli regime and take necessary political, legal and punitive measure against this rogue entity to support Palestinian People’s right to self-determination and their legitimate resistance against occupation.

9-The assassination of Hamas leader by Zionist regime was driven by “sinister objectives” aiming at creating yet a new crisis in the region and complicating Iran’s regional and international relations, particularly at the onset of the new elected President and his administration.

10-Such cowardly assassination of our guest will only strengthen our resolve to defend our territory and support Palestinian People to struggle against their right and occupation. This act could not have occurred without the authorization and intelligence support of the U.S.

11-This aggressive act of terrorism as provocative as it is, constitutes a serious breach of peace and security and requires immediate and effective intervention by the UN Security Council in discharge of its responsibilities under the UN Charter.

12-Considering these grave consequences of Israel criminal acts on regional peace and security, the Islamic Republic of Iran has called upon the UN Security Council and Organization for Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to condemn unequivocally and strongly the act of aggressive and terrorist attacks by the Israeli regime on Iran’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as this recent act of aggression.

13-Islamic Republic of Iran urged the UN Security Council to consider sanctions and other measures to punish Israel on its violation of international law.

14-The killing of Mr. Haniyeh came as Israel continued its devastating campaign in the Gaza Strip which has Killed more than n 39,400 victims and injured over 91,000 since October,7 2023.
